Ascochyta

This pest can be found at any time during the entire season. However, it is in the springtime when it seems to cause the most concern for homeowners and for good reason. A seemingly healthy green lawn will turn the color of straw in a very short time. The damage appears splotchy across the lawn surface and is often accompanied by wheel line impressions from maintenance equipment.

In the early to mid spring season the fungus is triggered by contrasting weather conditions. The fluctuations between hot sunny days followed by cool damp weather creates the conditions for the fungus to erupt. If a lawn has been stressed or meets other criteria it is during these times when you may see ascochyta. Outbreaks can occur several times depending on the weather, it is not uncommon to see a wave of the fungus appear, then disappear only to come back a second or third time.

Ascochyta as discussed in this springtime setting generally requires no special treatment as it will typically go away as fast as it arrived once climatic conditions are no longer favorable. The outbreak does not create any lasting damage. The lawn pictured above returned to a normal appearance within a week of capturing the image. One note of caution: homeowners will often react to the sight of this pest by applying extra water to the lawn as they believe the lawn is dying because it is dry. That response only prolongs the occurrence. It is best to water in a normal manner appropriate for the season.
