Necrotic Ring Spot Control (NRS)

NRS is the most common lawn disease along the front range. This disease is caused by fungus and is characterized by a patch of green grass circled by an indented ring of dead turf. The circular pattern is the key identifying feature.

NRS is widely studied but not all that well understood. It affects lawns that are stressed or pushed. Research indicates that excessive watering, fertilization and low mowing heights may trigger an outbreak of the disease. The fungus flourishes during the cool portions of the season and goes somewhat dormant during the summer months.

Good cultural practices, such as; aeration, proper watering, higher cutting heights and fertilization at the proper rates and times seem to keep the fungus at bay. Once established, NRS will spread across the lawn surface becoming an appearance distraction.

We treat the fungus in the spring using a combination of a granular fungicide paired with overseeding and an aeration. Over time with changes to the cultural practices and consistent treatment, the fungus can be controlled. The process may require several years to complete. As part of our BestCareâ„¢ lawn care program, lawns are inspected for NRS and if found, brought to the attention of the homeowner.
